With vaseline applied, lycra shimmering and lunges aplenty 64 entrepid magic seekers met at the Better food company in St Werburghs on a warm summers night for an evening of bikes, cinema and cake fun. Attendees on bikes sped ahead with 4 times Olympic bike champion ‘Kerry 220′ winding past herds of sheep and through miles of dark tunnels. Magic seekers on foot were led by BMX half pipe world record holder ‘Joey PK Ripper’.
The al-fresco grass lined amphitheatre of Boiling wells was the perfect setting for our greenest event to date. And it wasn’t just the setting that was green, the event was powered by YOU! that’s right all electricity was generated from participants cycling their way through the film screening. Charlie from the awesome Electric Pedals in London provided us with the means to make this happen.
There were also a couple of firsts at this event! A mini AWAMU shop was open, showcasing some of our finest hand-made products from Uganda allowing visitors to touch and see up close the amazing designs and quality work in the clothing ranges. While people were getting seated and grabbing yummy refreshments for the night we also screened a slideshow of photos Kerry took on her recent adventures in Uganda so you can see first hand who your lovely donations have been helping.
In keeping with Magic Lantern tradition we showed a film with links to the event set up and location. “Breaking Away tells the story of best friends Dave, Mike, Cyril and Moocher who have just graduated from high school. Although each of the four is a totally different personality from the other three, they also have in common the fact of being unfocused and unmotivated in life. The one slight exception is Dave. Although he has no job and doesn’t know what to do with his life, he is a champion bicycle racer… ” Written by Huggo

We support the Awamu. Women in the projects we fund are supported to earn a living – children in their care are healthier, happier and can go to schools in two of the poorest areas of Kampala, Uganda. 100% of the profits made at Magic Lantern goes to Awamu.
